Even within one season, the extremes in temperature across Canada spark
the need for personalized solutions within its cold chain. When a personalized cold chain solution is required, clear and well-defined criteria is of the utmost importance to allow for accurate communication with partners.
The consequences can be costly if this is not followed. Jim Bacon, Cold Chain Industry Expert (formerly with Grifols) notes: "All too often, solutions are created that do not completely deliver because there wasn’t enough clarity and agreement at the initial stages. This often occurs when price is a leading factor in determining the solution. Custom or not, if the solution doesn’t protect the product, the outcome can be devestating."
The topic of customized solutions within cold chain has taken many different directions over the years. Jim Bacon notes that in the early 2000’s many cold chain shipper providers created completely customized solutions based on payload, temperature profiles, and duration. Then, driven mainly by cost, universal solutions began to rise in prevalence qualified with ISTA standard profiles.
