Pharma Logistics Glossary: Reusable packaging

This packaging is durable in its structure so it can withstand multiple journeys when transporting medicines.  Reusable containers are purchased on a lease or rental basis which can allow pharma firms to invest more into financing the acquisition of a unit.  Available temperature modes for reusable containers include active, hybrid and passive. Reusable systems offer a quite substantial environmental profile as its components are reused. Sustainable designs may even contain recyclable components or be made of renewable materials.

The necessity of a closed distribution loop with these containers stands as an additional cost and operational burden, adding to the shipper's carbon footprint and fuel bills. Return logistics is seen by some shippers as a large blockade for choosing to switch to reusable containers when transporting medicines.
