Pharma Logistics News: Q3 Highlights

Following the quarter which saw the launch of the first solid phase change of material (PCM) Pharma Logistics IQ brings you the highlights of pharma supply chain news in the third quarter of 2016.

Tech in the spotlight

Debut solid PCM launched: Cold Chain Technologies, an expert in temperature-sensitive distribution solutions for all segments of the life sciences supply chain, this month launched the first solid phase change material (PCM) to maintain the integrity of drugs and vaccines during transport. In early use by market-leading pharmaceutical manufacturers, the new Koolit® Advanced PCM Gel provides uniform thermal payload protection in a flexible, break-resistant gel pack. A short-cut for the vaccine cold chain? The Economist earmarked the potential behind a new technique which could simplify the process of manufacturing and transporting vaccines. This entailed the use of a rehydrated cellular vaccine factory to be used on site perhaps in emerging markets with remote destinations that require the vaccines. This idea was first reported by Dr James Collins of the Massachusetts Institute of Technologies and the initial positive testings with diphtheria. 3

Industry Forecasts

As some leading drug patents expire, global pharma market to hit $942bn by year end: A report from Pharmiweb has projected that the global pharmaceutical market will reach £942 billion by the close of 2016. Further noting that the market has managed to double in size over the last decade.1

Global market for bio-pharma logistics to sit at $91bn in 4 years time: The same report noted that the market for bio-pharmaceutical logistics is forecasted to hit $91 billion by 2020, a $30 billion incre ase from its value two years ago.1

Pharma wholesale and distribution market labelled to enjoy healthy growth: This quarter, Visiongain’s market intelligence report predicted that the pharma wholesale and distribution industry will enjoy a revenue of over £1,350 billion globally by 2020. 2

Cold chain IT market to undergo activity surge: The global spending within IT for the cold chain logistics market has been pinned to enjoy a CAGR of 8.3% between 2016 – 2020. The rise of cloud computing being a dominant driver for this increase, with its capabilities to enhance business agility and lower total cost of ownership. Heightened visibility with supply chain management systems is also labelled as a key growth area.4

Emerging Markets

Indian cold chain network gains speed: The association known as the Electronic Vaccine Intelligence Network, initiated by India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in line with its immunization programmme, has hit its first anniversary. The network supports the training and equipping of health officials in 160 districts across Rajasthan, Madhya, Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh to control temperatures of vaccine stores. Stock levels of vaccines are monitored also.5

Government invests in Pakistan cold chain to support vaccine transport: The government of Pakistan is reported to be funding 50% of a cold chain platform project alongside GAVI. This project intends to upgrade the cold chain capacity of Pakistan’s supply chain and vaccine storage. This project is launched in connection with Pakistan’s Expanded Program on Immunization.6

Regulations and Compliance

American airlines takes off to CEIV certification: Reports emerged in the media this quarter stating American Airlines Cargo has entered an agreement with IATA to acquire its Center for Excellence and Independent Validators (CEIV) pharma certification. The primary bases to be impacted are expected to be the home hub Dalla Fort Worth International and Miami International. 7

MHRA sounds alarm after legitimate drugs seep onto black market: This quarter UK regulatory entity the MHRA took to its blog to express some rising concerns in regards to the due diligence applied to qualified prescribers – wholesalers for example. The blog recapped the obligations to ensure that pharmaceuticals are distributed to licensed wholesalers after the body encountered recent cases of genuine licenced packs of diazepam, zopiclone and other medicines being leaked onto the black market. 9

MHRA applies new annex in cool chain excursion example: The MHRA examined the new EU GMP annex 16 in regards to the management of unexpected temperature deviations within pharmaceutical transport. The annex gives visibility on best practices in the face of unexpected temperature deviations from the marketing authorisation or GMP. More specifically, when Qualified Persons should consider confirming compliance or certifying a batch.

The body noted that it is open to receiving questions and comments on the revised guideline with an aim to assist with the industry’s adjustment for the guideline. 8
